Pershing Rifles, Company H-7 History
This history is being assembled a little at a time and will basically be a time line of things we are learning or memories about the company.
Pershing Rifles Company H-7 was started in the Fall of 1948.
In the Fall of 1963, Company H-7 started an auxiliary group called Kaydettes.
In the Fall of 1965, when Fred Roberts was the pledge trainer, he started calling the pledges "Grubbies".
At the Fall Little National Convention of 1966, the Kaydettes were selected to be the National Headquarters for Coed Affiliates Pershing Rifles (CAPERS). Fred Roberts was the company commander that year.
At the Spring National Convention in 1970 in San Antonio, Texas, Company H-7 was thrilled to have their honorary, Janice Fina named the National Honorary. James Hamilton was the company commander that year.
Company H-7 won the national drill meet and received the "Best Company" award from Pershing Rifles National for the 1972-1973 school year. Charles Brantley was the company commander that year. (Although I had many PR friends across the country, I always thought H-7 was the best company! It was about time that National recognized that! Linda)
In March, 2010, Linda learned from a recent Pershing Rifles National Commander, Chris Scheuerman, Company H-7 ended a few years ago. The members got mad about something and decided to withhold their national dues and after a few years lost their charter. We don't know what it was about, but is shows one of the reasons why the active members need a strong alumni group supporting them.
As you can see from this brief history, during the late 60's and early 70's, Company H-7 was definitely a well known company nationally!
Note: After information was available on the internet, I tried to keep track of Company H-7 occasionally. There were several years in the 1990's when they didn't pay their national dues and I don't know for sure if they existed during that time. But I did see they paid their dues again after that. I also remember one time during that period that 7th Regiment ceased to exist and they assigned the company a new designation in a different regiment. Currently the 7th is a Brigade with C-7 (Oklahoma State) the only company, with G-7 (Kansas State) in the process of starting. I'm glad to see that the brought the 7th Regiment back in some form and hope it will grow to become a full regiment in the future. Linda
