Junior Swingers Memories |
| I'll start this off with the one Shelby
mentioned on May 25, 2006 when dropped by his house to tell him
about this web site. The oldest two of his "second family"
are going to be in their last two years of high school (Bartlesville High
School) this year (2006-2007 year), yet neither of them have a driver's license yet.
I told them that their dad just remembered being a teen-ager
himself! His response, "I was a good driver." Then
he went on to tell the story of taking a car load of us to "Dody's
Dumps"...the hills that "defy gravity". As we went
over the first hill the front door came open. He remembers that 4
people were in the front seat. He grabbed Jack by the belt to hold
him in and Jack held on to Ann M. Then he swerved on the second hill
to get the door to close. And Ann got mad at him because her hair
got closed in the door. He also said that the back seat came
loose. I guess I was in the back seat and missed that!
Linda's car memory was Betty driving us to Tulsa to go to the Northeast Festival. Marianne, Shelby and I were in the back seat. Shelby had been up late the night before and decided to go to sleep on top of Marianne and I. We were driving up Hwy 66 to avoid the toll road. Betty checked to see if Shelby really was sleeping.....and starting changing gear....and changing gears. Suddenly Shelby sat up "Six gears?" I'll post more later, but anyone else can add memories by e-mail.

| OK, here are some more!
Linda's Jim Thaggard memories: Why did Mr. G called him "Jim Jim"? I couldn't remember his last name when introducing him and hesitated and said Jim again. Dad immediately said "Nice to meet you, Jim Jim." (Question: Who else had a Junior Swingers nickname given by Mr. G.? Answer: Tom Adams was called "TA" because Tom Fowler was already in the club, making a confusion of "Toms".) I remember seeing him drive up at the YMCA in the "Ed's Aircraft" car...triumphantly proclaiming he passed the driving test that afternoon. I remember when he went to summer school in Austria and came to visit me in Germany....and miss read the train schedule...and got off at the wrong station. Remember, by this time Jim had taken several years of German in school! He discovered German dialects that summer. After being frustrated all summer in Austria by their dialect, he thought he'd be OK when he came to Germany.....only to discover that the region we were in has an isolated variant of the Bavarian dialect! I can also remember last time I saw him. I brought my son home from Germany for a visit when he was a year old. Jim came to my parents' house and had a great time with David. Plus, my memories in the hallway at the YMCA. Shelby told me once that it was the only time he ever saw me "at a loss for words"!!! (If you don't know the whole story, I'll tell you about it directly...I don't want that one on-line!!! Any more Jim memories....or even Tom Fowler memories...or Johnny Newton memories (I can't publish mine on the Internet)...or memories of any of the others friends we have lost? |
| Another Memory From Linda: When I first moved home, I lived across the street from Shelby. He helped me do a lot of things in the house. One day we were struggling to get this huge cabinet out of the bathroom when he accidentally hit me with his arm in the wrong place. He apologized like crazy and I told him that is was no problem, he was almost like a brother. He started laughing and asked if I remembered what Jack used to say when I called him "Little Brother". I'd forgotten it. Anyone else remember? (Again I don't want to publish that one on the internet and have it come up in the search engines.
