CAPER Company Q-8

CAPER Company Q-8 was Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.  I remember this company because I'd have never known about Hofstra University.  I also remember that when one charter application came in from New York I thought it would be nice if any of the members were the New York girls I met at Girl Scout Round-up in 1965.  You can tell I was from Oklahoma and didn't realize how big New York City area is!

Bill Wagner was the Commander of Pershing Rifles Company Q-8 in the early 1980's and forced the merger of their CAPERS into the Pershing Rifles company.  He doesn't think they were ever chartered.  He thinks they just called them CAPERS.  That is one of the major problems I'm facing in finding the companies.  Once CAPERS got established, Pershing Rifles companies would start a "CAPER" group and never get it chartered.

When the group was started around the time of the pictures below from 1968, the first members were girl friends of the Pershing Rifles members and they got them cords that were like the Pershing Rifles cords without the shields on them.  I still feel like they did charter before I graduated.

When I received a binder of CAPER documents and letters from the P/R archives, I found out that I was correct.  In a list of companies when I took command (Sept 1970), Company Q-8 was there.  Comparing earlier lists, it is obvious that they chartered during the 1969-70 school year.  (Needless to say, I scanned the list and sent it to Bill Wagner!!!)

These pictures were taken on October 12, 1968 at a recruitment event.  They had just started a coed group which they called CAPERS (as many did after the national organization started in 1955.  Paul is checked with others Pershing Rifles he know to find out if the group did get a charter.  I really feel that they did, but probably not until the 197-71 school year.  This first group of members were mostly girl friends of Pershing Rifles members.  They wore their Pershing Rifles Company patch on their uniforms and cords that look very much like Pershing Rifles cords.  I don't see the Pershing Rifles shield on them, as those would have been only for initiated Pershing Rifles members.  When I mentioned that to Paul, he remembered that you could buy to cord from LG Balfour with or without the Pershing Rifles shield.
