Pershing Angels Company R-4-5 |
CAPER Company C-15 was located at Virginia State College, Norfolk (now Norfolk State College) in Norfolk, Virginia. According to the 1967 Pershing Rifleman yearbook, CAPER Company C-15 was one of the first 5 CAPER Companies, chartering before March 17, 1966. The attended the first CAPER National Convention in Washington, DC, in March of 1967.
In their article in the 1966 Pershing Rifleman yearbook, Pershing Rifleman, Pershing Rifles Company C-15 wrote:
"The Pershing Angels, our girls auxiliary group, have caused quite a stir in expansion circles. Other units are looking into the possibility of of starting such units at their schools. C-15 welcomes any requests for information about such expansion."
There were two groups using then name "Pershing Angels" name in 1966 (C-15 and T-1)and they both sounded establishes, so it's impossible at this time to know which one used it first. But because of the C-15's effort in helping other Pershing Rifles Companies learn how to start a coed group other CAPER companies also used that name. Because of the wide spread use of the name Pershing Angels, it was the logical choice for an organization name when CAPERS ended.
CAPER Company C-15's article in the 1969 Pershing Rifleman said they experienced a very successful year with the installation of the new officers being the first official act. They were active in the Homecoming festivities and where overwhelmed when one of their members, Sharon Cardwell was named Homecoming Queen.
After completing several Christmas projects, they took seven new pledges and began working with them on drill. They attended the Pershing Rifles National Convention in Cleveland to get ideas.
There is still a Pershing Angels Company at Norfolk State University (R-4-5). We welcome their active and alumni members to this site, too. If they know the actual date of the original charter we would love to get it. I actually hope that the current Pershing Angel Companies can find their CAPER Charters and send us the copies! OK, Pershing Angels, start hunting.
