CAPER Company C-10 (later Company C-17)
CAPER Company C-10 was at New Mexico State University was located at Los Cruses, NM. CAPER Company C-10 is one of the companies I had forgotten about about until I was loaned several copies of the Pershing Rifleman yearbooks. According to the 1968 Pershing Rifleman were chartered during the 1967-68 school year, but because of finding the yearbooks below, I'm wondering if they were chartered earlier, but missed in the first list.
After I wrote the paragraph above, I received a binder of CAPER documents and letters from the P/R archives. Company C-10 mailed their charter application at the end of the school year and it sat in the ROTC building over the summer until we got back to school in August. There were three companies that did this.
I also searched e-Yearbooks and found them in 4 yearbooks. In the 1966 and 1967 yearbooks they were called Kaydettes and in the 1968 and 1969 yearbooks they were called CAPERS. This makes them the first company I've found who changed their name when they chartered with CAPERS.
I discovered in the 1971 Pershing Rifleman yearbook that the 10th Regiment was closed that year (or the year before since their was no 1970 Pershing Rifleman) and their Pershing Rifles Company became C-10. Since our companies changed designations when their P/R company changed designation, they were then CAPER Company C-10. But I'm not sure if CAPER National even knew it!!! In the unit list written at the start of my command year (September 1970), we still had them as Company C-10. On the partial roster from 1978, they were Company C-17. That means that they were active at least until a few years before CAPERS were merged into Pershing Rifles

This picture was posted on
Facebook by Sherry Lane Fletcher an alumnae from Company C-10. It's
kind of sad, but brings back a lot of memories of the turbulent times
those of us who chose to be in CAPERS in the late 1960's lived through.
Sherry had developed an attachment to the ROTC Department's donkey and is seen in this picture comforting him after his ears were cut off. She didn't say by whom, but we can all pretty well guess that is was by someone who was against the war in Vietnam. |
